Inner West Ale Trail: A Walkable Craft Beer Adventure

Explore some of Sydney's best breweries, all within walking distance in the Inner West

Sydney, a city famed for its sparkling harbour and iconic opera house, might not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of craft breweries. But tucked away in the inner west, a vibrant scene has been bubbling away, pouring forth a delicious array of flavours that would make any beer enthusiast weak at the knees. This is your guide to the Inner West Ale Trail, a hop-filled adventure through the heart of Marrickville.

A Sudsy Story: Sydney's Craft Beer Revolution

For years, the Aussie beer scene was a bit like a summer day with no breeze – a little flat. Lagers reigned supreme, and variety was, well, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly overflowing. But then, like a southerly buster, the craft beer revolution blew in from the USA and UK, shaking things up and introducing a whole new world of flavours.

The Inner West, with its warehouses ripe for conversion and a community thirsty for something different, became the heartland of this beery rebellion. Marrickville, in particular, emerged as a frothy paradise.

Why Marrickville? Well, imagine trying to brew a batch of your finest ale in a cramped apartment. Not ideal, right? Marrickville’s industrial past, with its spacious warehouses and factories, provided the perfect playground for brewers to set up shop. Plus, with the city centre just a hop, skip, and a train ride away, getting there is a breeze.

But it wasn’t just the bricks and mortar. Marrickville’s got that special something – a community of artists, musicians, and all-around creative types who welcomed the craft beer movement with open arms (and mouths). Throw in a supportive council that saw the potential of this burgeoning industry, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a craft beer haven.
